ICSVE’s New “Breaking the ISIS Brand” Video Clip – Today is the Female Slave Market Day in ad-Dawlah
Anne Speckhard, Ph.D.
Abu Abdullah, a Syrian ISIS defector, was interviewed in Turkey by the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism’s Ahmet S. Yayla and Anne Speckhard after he escaped from ISIS. Today we release the edited video clip of him denouncing ISIS’s practice of selling captured Sunni and Shia women as sex slaves. The video which is part of the larger ICSVE Breaking the ISIS Brand campaign relying on video clips from ICSVE interviews of ISIS defectors denouncing the group is entitled “Today is the Female Slave Market Day in ad-Dawlah” and was edited and produced by ICSVE’s Zack Baddorf. You can watch Abu Abdullah denounce ISIS here.
Transcript for Today is the Female Slave Market Day in ad-Dawlah:
00.03 Today is the female slave market day.
00.05 It’s distribution day.
00.07 I hope a jihadi will give me one as a gift.
00.09 Hey you, where is my girl?
00.12 They turn Muslim women into slaves.
00.16 They take the girls as slaves and behead the parents.
00.18 Then they sell the girls.
00.25 If she is beautiful, a foreign fighter will take her [as his slave].
00.29 Or she is sold with the other slaves.
00.36 Abu Abdallah,
Former ISIS Soldier
00.36 I was deeply affected by this.
00.40 Is it ok for a Muslim woman to become a sex slave?
00.45 In what religion can a woman be a slave?
00.48 I once passed by on the street and saw them selling the women as slaves.
00.57 They were women from Iraq.
1.00 Some of the brothers tried to get me to take a woman.
1.08 I told him, ‘This isn’t right.’
1.11 He said, ‘She is a slave so it is halal [permissible].’
1.16 I told him, ‘Don’t you know those are Muslim women?’
1.20 In the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most gracious,
1.24 I address my brothers and all young people, Europeans and Arabs, don’t join ISIS.
1.33 As a brother in the faith, I swear to Allah: They don’t know anything about Islam.
1.38 They are not Islamic. They are not really Muslims.
1.43 Brothers, who wants to sell? I will buy them.
1.46 Who wants to sell his slave? I will buy her.
1.48 In December 2014, ISIS issued a fatwa justifying the captivity of women from other faiths, like Jews and Christians.
1.55 However, their fatwa barred forcing captured Muslim women not worshipping to their standards into sexual slavery.
2.00 Yet, ISIS defector, Abu Abdullah, claims ISIS violated its own fatwa by capturing and pressing Sunni and Shia women into sexual slavery.
2.07 Many ISIS defectors interviewed by the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism were disturbed by this violation of Islam and ISIS’s own fatwa.
2.11 Most Muslims around the world today do not accept any scriptural basis for sexual slavery.
